Malayalam Actor Sreenivasan’s death on December 20th, leaves the industry without a stalwart actor & director

Kochi: The malayalam actor, screenwriter and director Sreenivasan has passed away. He was 69 years old.  He had been undergoing treatment for several health problems in the past few years.


He died at Ernakulam Taluk Hospital, Kerala. 
According to the hospital authorities, he died around 8.30 am. He had been facing health problems and had undergone heart surgery in 2022. 

Later today, the body was shifted from the hospital to his residence. The body will be kept at the Ernakulam Town Hall for public viewing. The last rites will be performed at his residence later.

Sreenivasan, a native of Kannur, has been living in Kochi for the past several years.
Born on 6 April 1956 in Pattiyath, Kannur district, he graduated in Economics from PRNSS College, Mattanur, and then moved to Chennai to study film at the Tamil Nadu Film and Television Institute.
He entered the acting profession in 1976 with the film 'Manimuzhakam' directed by PA Bakkar. Sreenivasan created many memorable characters, often acting in many comedic roles alongside star actors like Mohanlal and Mammootty. 

He worked with directors Priya Darshan and Sathyan Anthikad. Apart from acting, Sreenivasan was also widely praised for his screenplay writing in the 1984 film 'Odaruthammava Aalariam'.

He made his directorial debut with the 1989 film 'Vadakkunokkiyanthram'. It is considered a classic film in Malayalam cinema and won the Kerala State Film Award.

He also directed the film Chintavishtaaya Shyamala (1998), which won the National Film Award for Best Film on Other Social Issues. He played the lead role in both films.

'Sandesham' (1991), a political satire written by Sreenivasan and still often referenced in political discourse, won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Story.

He is survived by his wife Vimala and two sons. His two sons, Vineeth Sreenivasan and Dhyan Sreenivasan, are also actors in Malayalam cinema. After settling in Kochi, he also became famous for organic farming near his home.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said in a statement that Sreenivasan's passing is an irreparable loss to Malayalam cinema.
The death of veteran actor Sreenivasan has left Malayalam cinema with a powerful actor, director, screenwriter and scriptwriter who made a name for himself in Malayalam through over 220 films.
