The passing of Fionnuala Hartigan (née Morgan), a respected vice-principal, devoted educator, and mother of three, has led to an outpouring of heartfelt tributes from former students, colleagues, parents, and friends. Mrs Hartigan, who resided in Newry, served as vice-principal of St Patrick’s College in Banbridge, Co Down.
She is being remembered widely as a “dedicated educator, compassionate role model, and deeply caring individual,” according to reports from Belfast Live.
In a statement shared on social media, St Patrick’s College expressed profound grief at the loss of their long-serving colleague:
“Our school community is beyond heartbroken that we must announce the passing of our dearly beloved friend and colleague, our vice-principal, Fionnuala Hartigan. Words cannot describe the terrible void that this devastating news has left in our school and in our hearts.”
Mrs Hartigan dedicated 27 years to St Patrick’s College, beginning her career there in 1998 as a Business and ICT teacher before rising through the ranks to senior leadership. Reflecting on her lifelong commitment, a school spokesperson said:
“Her career was defined by an unwavering, child-centred approach. Fionnuala believed in the potential of every young person and worked tirelessly to ensure their well-being and success were always prioritised. As vice-principal, her commitment to fostering a positive, vibrant, and inclusive environment was unmatched.”
The spokesperson added that her influence would continue to be felt for years to come:
“The impact of Fionnuala’s loving presence and selfless leadership has touched countless lives over these past 27 years. Her loss will be felt deeply throughout our community.”
The school extended its condolences to her husband Ciaran; her children Eoin, Orla, and Kate; her parents Raymond and Patricia; and her siblings Orla and Declan, requesting privacy and prayers for the family during this difficult time. A book of condolence was opened in the school’s assembly hall on Saturday afternoon.
Former pupils and staff shared their memories of Mrs Hartigan, honouring her influence both inside and outside the classroom.
One past pupil wrote:
“She wasn’t just a vice-principal—she truly cared about us as people. She encouraged me, believed in me, and made school feel like a place where I could grow. Her kindness will never be forgotten.”
Another tribute described her as someone who “always went above and beyond, doing everything with grace and the biggest heart,” calling her “one of a kind.”
A staff member recalled:
“It has been an absolute privilege to work alongside you all these years. I will miss you dearly as both a colleague and a friend.”
She was also remembered as “the loveliest, most gentle person” and “a genuinely kind woman who cared passionately about the well-being of every young person in her care.”
Mrs Hartigan’s remains will repose at her family home at 4 The Forge, Hilltown Road, Newry, on Saturday and Sunday from 1pm to 9pm. Removal will take place on Monday for Funeral Mass at 12.30pm at St Catherine's Church, Dominic Street, followed by burial in Monkshill Cemetery.
