Dublin: Asylum seekers in Ireland have launched a public protest challenging the country’s immigration policies, escalating a demonstration that has been ongoing for the past three weeks.
The protest intensified on Wednesday as demonstrators gathered near the Dáil Éireann, demanding legal recognition and permission to remain in the country.
The protesters are calling on the Irish government to grant amnesty and formally recognise their asylum claims, while urging authorities to halt deportations. Despite the government indicating that asylum seekers willing to leave Ireland voluntarily would be offered €10,000 (approximately ₹11 lakh) each, none of the demonstrators have agreed to accept the compensation and depart.
Hundreds of asylum seekers, including children, took part in the protest near the Dáil, carrying banners and placards bearing slogans such as “Stop Deportations.” The demonstration caused traffic disruption on Molesworth Street, close to Leinster House, as protesters blocked the road as part of their agitation.
In a further escalation, a group of asylum seekers has set up temporary tents near the Department of Agriculture offices in the capital, signalling their intent to continue the protest until their demands are addressed.
The demonstrations underscore growing tensions over Ireland’s immigration and asylum policies, even as the government faces increasing pressure to balance humanitarian responsibilities with domestic concerns.
