Varanasi: Jewellery shops in Varanasi have introduced stricter entry regulations in response to a rise in thefts and growing security threats.
Customers wearing burqas, masks, helmets or any headgear that obscures the face will not be permitted to purchase gold or enter jewellery showrooms, the local unit of the Uttar Pradesh Jewellers Association (UPJA) has announced.
Security-Driven Decision
The move follows a series of incidents involving theft and fraud targeting jewellery establishments across the state. Shop owners have expressed concern that individuals with covered faces are difficult to identify through CCTV footage, posing a significant risk in the event of criminal activity.
As part of the implementation, jewellery stores across Varanasi have installed warning notices outside their premises stating that entry with covered faces is prohibited.
Association’s Stand
UP Jewellers Association district president Kamal Singh said allowing customers whose identities cannot be clearly verified poses serious security challenges. He noted that even identity verification becomes ineffective if a customer’s face is not visible, making it difficult to establish accountability in case of disputes or crimes.
Likely Expansion to Other Districts
Similar restrictions had earlier been introduced by jewellery associations in parts of Bihar, where customers with covered faces are barred from buying or selling gold. Following its rollout in Varanasi, the UP Jewellers Association is reportedly considering extending the measure to other districts across Uttar Pradesh.
The decision underscores growing concerns within the trade over safety and surveillance, as jewellers seek to balance customer convenience with heightened security needs.
