Bengaluru: A 23-year-old dental student in Bengaluru has died by suicide following alleged repeated harassment by faculty members over her attire and skin colour. Acting on preliminary findings that indicated lapses on the part of the teaching staff, the college management has suspended six professors in connection with the incident.
The victim, a third-year Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) student, was found dead at her residence on Friday, January 9.
Family Alleges Mental Harassment
According to the student’s family, she had been subjected to sustained mental harassment by her teachers. Her mother stated that the situation escalated after the student took a day’s leave due to an eye-related health issue, which prevented her from attending a scheduled seminar. When she returned to college the following day, the student was allegedly humiliated publicly by faculty members in front of her classmates.
In a complaint lodged with the police, the mother alleged that the teachers mocked the student’s skin colour, clothing, and language, and went so far as to question her suitability to become a doctor. The deceased was the only child of her parents.
Student Protests and Administrative Action
The incident triggered widespread protests on the college campus, with students demanding strict action against those responsible. As the agitation intensified, the college administration suspended six faculty members on January 12.
Police have registered a case and initiated a detailed investigation into the circumstances leading to the student’s death. While college authorities have stated that firm action will be taken against academic pressure and personal harassment, the incident has reignited concerns over discriminatory practices and mental health challenges faced by students in medical and dental institutions.
The case has sparked broader debate on the need for stronger safeguards against harassment and more robust support systems within higher education campuses.
