Bengaluru: The Hebbagodi police have arrested a 23-year-old man, a native of Kerala, in connection with a series of thefts involving women’s undergarments from residential balconies and drying areas in the Vidyanagar locality.
The accused has been identified as Amal N. Ajikumar, a resident of Hebbagodi. Police action followed a rise in complaints from local residents reporting the disappearance of laundry items, prompting an intensified investigation.
Investigation and Arrest
According to police officials, surveillance was increased after CCTV footage from multiple homes showed a young man allegedly trespassing onto private premises, primarily during nighttime hours, and selectively stealing women’s innerwear. Based on the evidence gathered, the suspect was tracked and subsequently arrested.
A search conducted at the accused’s residence resulted in the recovery of a large number of women’s undergarments, which police believe were stolen from nearby residential buildings. The items have been seized as part of the ongoing investigation.
Findings During Investigation
Police said that a forensic examination of the accused’s mobile phone revealed images and videos allegedly showing him wearing the stolen garments. During questioning, the accused reportedly admitted to the acts, stating that the behaviour provided him with a sense of psychological gratification.
A senior police officer said the accused claimed the acts were driven by an internal compulsion rather than financial motives.
Legal Action
A case has been registered at the Hebbagodi police station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, invoking the following sections:
- Section 303(2) – Theft
- Section 329(4) – Criminal trespass
- Section 79 – Insulting the modesty of a woman
The accused has been remanded to judicial custody, and further investigation is underway. Police officials indicated that a psychological assessment may be considered as part of the legal process, given the nature of the offences.
