Trump Intensifies Push to Acquire Greenland, Warns of Global Security Implications

Washington: US President Donald Trump has stepped up efforts to acquire the Arctic island of Greenland, signalling a willingness to negotiate with Denmark while warning that the issue has serious implications for global security and world peace.

In recent statements, Trump alleged that China and Russia are attempting to expand their strategic influence in Greenland, asserting that Denmark lacks the capacity to adequately safeguard the territory. He described Greenland as a critical geopolitical asset and said its future could significantly impact international stability.

Tariffs Imposed on European Nations

As part of his strategy to increase pressure over the Greenland issue, Trump announced a 10 per cent additional tariff on imports from eight European countries, effective February 1. The affected nations are Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump stated that these countries have benefited for decades from American security guarantees without adequate reciprocity. He warned that the tariffs would remain in place until an agreement is reached on the complete transfer of Greenland to US control.

Strategic Importance and the ‘Golden Dome’ Defence System

Trump has repeatedly argued that Greenland is vital to the effective deployment of the United States’ advanced missile defence initiative, known as the “Golden Dome”. According to the White House, defence systems costing hundreds of billions of dollars would function at full capacity only if Greenland were brought under US jurisdiction, given its strategic Arctic location.

Protests in Greenland and Denmark

The US move has sparked strong public backlash in Greenland, with large-scale protests reported in the capital Nuuk. Hundreds of demonstrators took to the streets carrying placards reading “Greenland is not for sale” and “We will decide our future”. Similar protests have also been reported in Denmark.

Meanwhile, in an effort to ease the escalating diplomatic tensions, a delegation from the US Congress travelled to Copenhagen for discussions with Danish officials. However, President Trump has maintained a firm stance, reiterating that any outcome short of Greenland coming under US control would be unacceptable.

The unfolding dispute has triggered a significant diplomatic crisis, underscoring rising geopolitical competition in the Arctic region and raising fresh questions about sovereignty, security, and international relations.
