Iran Will Not Yield to Protests, Says Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei

Tehran: Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has declared that the Islamic Republic will not back down in the face of weeks-long domestic protests, warning that those he described as agents of foreign powers will not be tolerated. Addressing the nation through state television, Khamenei accused external forces of fomenting unrest to destabilise the country.

Khamenei alleged that protesters were acting in the interests of foreign governments, including the United States. “Everyone must understand that the Islamic Republic will not take a single step back,” he said. “Those who serve foreign agendas will be rejected by the Iranian people and the Islamic system.” He further claimed that the protests were aimed at pleasing U.S. President Donald Trump, accusing demonstrators of seeking to undermine their own country.

Communications Restrictions Intensified

In an effort to curb the spread of unrest, Iranian authorities have imposed a nationwide internet shutdown since Thursday, along with restrictions on international telephone calls. The internet monitoring group NetBlocks confirmed the near-total blackout. The measures followed calls for protests by Reza Pahlavi, son of Iran’s former Shah, who was overthrown in the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Unrest Continues Despite Crackdown

Despite the communications blackout, demonstrations have continued in Tehran and several other major cities. Activists have circulated images showing protesters setting fires and chanting slogans in the streets. Iranian state media has blamed what it termed “terrorist agents” backed by the United States and Israel for acts of arson and violence.

According to reports from U.S.-based human rights organisations, at least 34 protesters and four security personnel have been killed in the clashes so far, while approximately 2,200 people have been arrested. Political analysts say the scale and persistence of the protests reflect deep public discontent with Iran’s current leadership, even as the authorities signal a hardline response.
