Gir Somnath (Gujarat): A 60-year-old man risked his life to save his son from a leopard attack in Gujarat’s Gir Somnath district, killing the animal in a desperate act of self-defence.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening, following which the Forest Department registered a case against both the father and son for the killing of a protected wild animal.
According to officials, Babubhai Naranbhai Vaja (60) was resting in a shed outside his house when a leopard, believed to have been hiding nearby, suddenly attacked him. Hearing his father’s screams, his son Shardul (27) rushed out of the house to help. The leopard then turned on the son, pouncing on him and biting him.
Seeing his son under attack, Babubhai picked up a sickle kept at the house and confronted the animal. After a struggle lasting several minutes, the leopard succumbed to its injuries.
Both Babubhai and Shardul sustained serious injuries in the attack. They were initially taken to a nearby government hospital and later shifted to a private hospital for specialised treatment.
Forest Department officials who arrived at the scene seized the weapon used to kill the animal. A case has been registered against the father and son under provisions related to the killing of a protected wildlife species, officials said.
The incident has once again highlighted the growing human–wildlife conflict in areas bordering forest regions in Gir Somnath, where encounters with leopards have been reported with increasing frequency.
