Mumbai: Altercation Between Masseuse and Client Goes Viral, Police Register Case

Mumbai: A video showing a physical altercation between a masseuse and a 46-year-old woman at a residence in Mumbai has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread discussion and prompting police action.

The incident reportedly took place on Wednesday at an apartment in Bhakti Park, Wadala East, after a masseuse employed through Urban Company (UC) arrived at the client’s home, only to be informed that the booking had been cancelled.

The viral clip shows the masseuse standing inside the bedroom and recording the customer on her mobile phone, while the customer is heard asking her to leave the house. In the video, the woman can be heard saying, “Ghar mein khade reh ke badtameezi nahi karna” (Do not stand inside the house and misbehave).

The situation escalated when the customer attempted to take the masseuse’s bag, while the latter resisted and stated that she was recording the incident. The video later captures both women physically assaulting each other. In one segment, the masseuse is seen being pushed onto the bed, while in another, she appears to be pulling the customer by her hair.

The woman’s son, who recorded the video, is heard accusing the masseuse of entering the house and assaulting his mother. He can also be heard threatening to call the police and warning the masseuse of legal consequences.

According to a report by The Free Press Journal, the complainant, Shahnaz Wahid Sayyed, a public relations professional, had booked the massage service to address frozen shoulder pain. She later cancelled the appointment after finding the therapist’s portable massage bed to be in poor condition and unsuitable for use at her home.

Sayyed has alleged that following the cancellation, the masseuse assaulted her by pulling her hair, scratching her eye, and pushing her to the ground before leaving the premises.

The masseuse has been identified as Ashwini Shivnath Vartapi (32). Police have registered a non-cognisable offence under Section 115(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Further inquiry into the incident is underway.

The episode has once again highlighted concerns over disputes during doorstep service deliveries and the need for clear protocols to handle cancellations and customer-service provider conflicts.
