New Delhi: India is celebrating its 77th Republic Day today, with the national capital witnessing a grand ceremonial parade along Kartavya Path, showcasing the country’s military strength, cultural diversity, and developmental achievements to the world.
EU Leaders as Chief Guests
This year’s Republic Day celebrations carry special significance, as India is hosting dual chief guests for the first time. European Council President António Costa and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen are attending the celebrations in New Delhi, underscoring the growing strategic partnership between India and the European Union.
Display of Military Might
The Republic Day parade will commence at 10:30 am. Ahead of the parade, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay homage to fallen soldiers by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial.
The parade will feature an impressive display of India’s defence capabilities, including models of key weapon systems associated with ‘Operation Sindoor’ and newly raised military units. Contingents from the Army, Navy, Air Force, and paramilitary forces will march in ceremonial precision, reflecting the preparedness and professionalism of the armed forces.
Heightened Security Nationwide
Security has been significantly tightened across the country in view of the celebrations. Following intelligence alerts indicating potential threats from hostile elements, the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) has intensified surveillance along the Indo-Nepal border. Enhanced security checks are also underway in Jammu and Kashmir, as well as across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR).
Traffic Restrictions in Delhi
In view of the parade, extensive traffic restrictions have been imposed in the national capital.
Parade Route:
The procession will begin at Vijay Chowk, proceed along Kartavya Path, pass through India Gate, Tilak Marg, and Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, and conclude at the Red Fort.
Private vehicles will be restricted on major arterial roads, including the C-Hexagon, from the early hours of the morning. Commuters have been advised to plan their travel accordingly.
‘Bharat Parv’ Cultural Festival
As part of the Republic Day celebrations, a six-day cultural and tourism festival titled ‘Bharat Parv’ will begin today at the Red Fort. The festival will be inaugurated by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, along with Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.
‘Bharat Parv’ aims to highlight India’s rich cultural heritage by showcasing traditional art forms, folk performances, handicrafts, and diverse regional cuisines from across the country.
