Sabarimala:A crucial scientific report submitted by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) has revealed a substantial reduction in the quantity of gold originally plated on the Dwarapalaka (gatekeeper) sculptures at the Sabarimala temple, lending fresh momentum to the long-running gold theft investigation.
According to the findings, there is a marked discrepancy between the amount of gold applied to the sculptures in 1998 and the quantity presently detected. The report is based on a detailed scientific analysis of nearly 15 samples collected from the Dwarapalaka sculptures, copper plates, and related structures within the temple complex. The findings have been officially handed over to the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
Scientific Assessment:
VSSC conducted advanced tests to determine both the thickness and age of the gold coating on the copper surfaces. The analysis conclusively indicates a significant depletion of gold compared to the original specifications documented in 1998.
Suspected Replacement of Gold:
Investigators are now examining whether the gold currently present is the original material installed in 1998 or a later replacement. If the original gold has been removed, the SIT will seek to establish when it was taken, where it was diverted, and whether inferior or newly sourced gold was used as a substitute.
Possible Antiquities Smuggling Angle:
The court had earlier expressed suspicion that the incident may resemble a “Kapoor model” theft—a term associated with international antiquities smuggling networks. Reports suggest that due to its age and religious significance, the gold adorning the Dwarapalaka sculptures carries immense archaeological and heritage value, far exceeding its market price.
Status of the Case
The VSSC report, which was submitted before the Kollam Vigilance Court, was handed over to the investigation team on Thursday. While several individuals, including a temple Thantri (chief priest), have already been arrested in connection with the case, tracing and recovering the missing original gold remains a major challenge for investigators.
The consolidated report containing VSSC’s findings and the SIT’s conclusions will be submitted to the Kerala High Court in a sealed cover on Friday. With indications pointing towards possible high-level involvement, the revelations are expected to play a decisive role in determining the future course of the case.
