Kota (Rajasthan): A burglary attempt in Rajasthan’s Kota took an unusual turn when one of the suspects became trapped in a kitchen exhaust fan while trying to break into a house, police said.
The incident occurred at the residence of Subhash Kumar Rawat, who was away with his wife on a pilgrimage to the Khatu Shyam Temple in Sikar district on January 3. The couple returned home around 1 am the following day and were startled by an unexpected sight inside their house.

As they unlocked the main gate, the headlights of a scooter parked outside illuminated the kitchen, revealing a man wedged halfway through the exhaust fan opening—his upper body inside the house and the rest of his body hanging outside. Alarmed, the couple raised an outcry, prompting neighbours to rush to the spot.
Police from the Borkheda station arrived shortly after being alerted by local residents. Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had entered the house with the intention of stealing valuables but became stuck while attempting to crawl through the narrow exhaust fan shaft.
“The accused was not alone. One of his accomplices managed to flee after hearing the commotion, while the other got trapped,” a police officer said, adding that the suspect attempted to intimidate the residents by claiming his associates were nearby.
The tense situation lasted nearly an hour before police personnel managed to rescue the trapped burglar. He was subsequently taken into custody and is currently being questioned.
During the investigation, police also seized a car allegedly used by the accused. Notably, the vehicle had a ‘police’ sticker pasted on it, which officials believe may have been used to avoid suspicion.
A video of the incident has surfaced on social media and is rapidly going viral, drawing widespread reactions. While some users described the episode as “instant karma,” others mocked the failed burglary attempt, highlighting the irony of the thief getting stuck in an exhaust fan.
Police said further investigation is underway to trace the absconding accomplice and ascertain whether the accused is linked to other theft cases in the area.
