JNU Slogan Row: FIR Filed Against Students Over Objectionable Sloganeering

New Delhi: The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) administration has moved to initiate strict action against students accused of raising provocative and allegedly anti-national slogans inside the campus. The university’s Chief Security Officer has submitted a complaint to the Vasant Kunj North Police Station, seeking the registration of an FIR over slogans raised during a protest held near Sabarmati Hostel..

The FIR was lodged at Vasant Kunj North Police Station based on a complaint filed by JNU’s Chief Security Officer. The case has been registered under Sections 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of public peace) and 353 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the complaint, the sloganeering took place during a gathering at “Guerilla Dhaba” on the JNU campus, where a group of students associated with the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) raised anti-government and anti-Modi slogans. The incident reportedly occurred after the Supreme Court denied bail to former JNU students Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case.

Police sources said around 30 to 40 students linked to Left-affiliated student organisations, including the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF) and All India Students’ Association (AISA), were present at the time.

The university administration has identified four JNUSU office-bearers in connection with the incident: President Aditi Mishra, Vice President Gopika K Babu, General Secretary Sunil, and Joint Secretary Danish Ali. In addition, several other students affiliated with Left student groups have been named, including Saad Azmi, Pakeeza Khan, Shubham, Kanishk Shashank and Mehmood Ilahi.

Earlier, the JNU administration warned of stringent action against those involved, stating that students found guilty could face immediate suspension, expulsion, or permanent debarment from the university. In an official statement, the administration said it had taken serious note of the incident and directed the university’s security branch to extend full cooperation to the police investigation.

The administration further asserted that such sloganeering goes against the principles of democratic dissent, violates the JNU Code of Conduct, and has the potential to disrupt public order, campus harmony, and the overall security environment of the university and the nation.

A report submitted by the Chief Security Officer to the JNU Proctor concluded that the slogans were raised in a deliberate and intentional manner, and were not a spontaneous expression of protest.
