Agartala/Unakoti: Ten people have been arrested in connection with communal clashes that erupted in the Saidarpar area of the Kumarghat subdivision in Tripura’s Unakoti district. The unrest, which began on January 10, was triggered by a dispute over the collection of chanda (subscription) for a local temple, police said.
Authorities imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita in the affected area, and mobile internet services remain suspended as a precautionary measure to prevent the spread of misinformation and further incidents. Security forces, including state police and paramilitary units, are conducting regular patrols in sensitive locations.
Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai told reporters that no fresh violence had been reported since Saturday and that the situation was under control, with heightened vigilance maintained across the subdivision. He added that four police personnel and six civilians were injured in the clashes.
Incident Details and Response
The violence reportedly began during a confrontation over temple fund collections in the Saidarpar–Shimultala locality. Initial arguments escalated into clashes between groups from different communities, prompting rapid deployment of additional forces to restore order.
Prohibitory measures, including the ban on large gatherings and restrictions on public movement, continue to be enforced. Police are monitoring the situation closely and will review the restrictions based on ground conditions in the coming days.
Political Reactions
Opposition leaders criticised the handling of the situation by the state government. Birajit Sinha, Congress legislature party leader, alleged that he was prevented by police from visiting the violence-affected area, citing security reasons. “We were going to meet the affected villagers after the clashes, but were stopped by the police,” he said.
Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury accused the BJP-led state government of failing to protect the lives and property of minority communities. He also criticised the chief minister for not issuing a prompt statement against the violence.
In contrast, State BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee condemned the violence and praised the police for taking swift action against those responsible for the unrest.
Security Measures in Place
The district administration has maintained a strong security presence in the area, including regular foot patrols by central and state forces. Internet services are expected to remain suspended until authorities are satisfied that peace and order have been fully restored.
