Canada / United States: US President Donald Trump has formally withdrawn Canada’s invitation to join the proposed Board of Peace, an initiative he has described as a gathering of the world’s most influential leaders.
Trump shared the official letter announcing Canada’s removal through his Truth Social platform.
“The Board of Peace will be the most prestigious assembly of leaders ever convened at any time. Through this letter, I am informing you that Canada’s invitation to join the Board of Peace is hereby withdrawn,” Trump wrote in a letter addressed to Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
The Board of Peace was envisioned by Trump as a high-level forum aimed at resolving international conflicts. However, no detailed information regarding its structure, mandate, or operational framework has been made public so far.
Davos Fallout: Trump–Carney Exchange
The latest development follows a sharp exchange of remarks between the two leaders at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland. In his keynote address, Carney warned that the existing global rules-based order was collapsing, a speech that received widespread attention and acclaim.
Trump responded with strong criticism directed at Canada.
“Canada should be grateful to the United States. Canada exists because of the United States. Mark should remember that the next time he makes such statements,” Trump said.
Carney’s Response
Without directly naming Trump or the United States, Carney criticised major powers for increasingly weaponising economic integration and tariffs.
“We are witnessing not a transition, but a rupture,” Carney said.
“Abandoning rules and values in pursuit of raw power and narrow self-interest will not serve the global community.”
He added that relying on nostalgia for past global arrangements was neither realistic nor strategic.
‘Canada Thrives on Its Own Strengths’
Following the withdrawal of the invitation, Carney issued a firm rebuttal via a post on social media platform X, rejecting Trump’s claim that Canada survives because of the United States.
“Canada thrives because we are Canadian,” Carney wrote. While acknowledging the strong economic, security, and cultural partnership between the two countries, he stressed that Canada’s sovereignty and prosperity are rooted in its own national strength, not dependence on Washington.
Rising Concerns Over Territorial Rhetoric
In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly made remarks suggesting the annexation of Canada, heightening diplomatic unease. His decision to share an AI-generated image portraying Canada and Greenland as part of the United States sparked widespread criticism in diplomatic circles.
Canada’s firm opposition to Washington’s ambitions regarding Greenland and its resistance to US tariff policies have further strained bilateral relations, pushing ties between the two neighbours to one of their lowest points in recent history.
