Arctic winds have arrived across Ireland, Met Eireann has issued a snow and cold warning for all counties

Arctic winds have arrived across Ireland, with heavy snowfall in many parts of *Ulster today. Forecasters are warning that the snow will continue to fall alongside freezing temperatures for several days.

2026 is set to get off to a cold start, with the cold remaining for at least the first 10 days. Met Eireann forecasters have said that two to three centimetres of snow is expected in parts of *Connacht and Ulster this weekend.

Met Eireann has issued a snow and cold warning for all counties from 3pm to 5pm, warning of "snow, -4C and temperatures falling". The warning is currently in place until Monday in some counties.

With temperatures expected to reach -4 degrees Celsius in Ireland tonight, MET Ireland has put a yellow snow, ice and low temperature warning in place for the entire country.

Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow Snow and Ice warning for Donegal this morning, with "winter rain and some snow" expected. It warns of hazardous travel conditions and poor visibility. The warning will be in effect from 8pm tonight and will remain in place until 11am tomorrow.

"The snowfall will become more widespread tomorrow, which will cause some disruption to travel," it said. On Saturday, the entire country is under a status yellow warning.

*A low temperature/ice warning is in place for Munster, Carlow, Dublin, Kildare, Kilkenny, Leinster, Longford, Meath, Offaly, Westmeath, Wexford and Wicklow from 6pm on Saturday until 11am on Sunday.

Temperatures will drop to between -2C and -4C in many areas. Met Eireann warns that "there will be heavy snowfall and icy areas".

A Status Yellow Snow and Ice Warning is in place for Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Connacht and Louth from 6pm on Saturday until 11am on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the UK Met Office has again issued a Status Yellow snow and ice warning for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Fermanagh, Tyrone and Derry after the initial warning expired at 10am this morning.

A snow and ice warning will remain in place for Antrim, Armagh, Down, Tyrone and Derry throughout this weekend, ending at 12pm on Monday.

Parts of the UK have started to see their first snowfall of the winter, with an Arctic blast bringing 'severe' cold. "Monday itself will be a very cold day, although there will be some rain in places across the country."

As people return to the roads on Monday morning, they should take into account the fact that there will be ice in some places, and while the snow will not be unusually heavy, the warning says there is a possibility of snow accumulation in higher areas.
