Mumbai: What began as an ordinary elevator ride in a Mumbai building turned into a terrifying ordeal when a bundle of balloons suddenly exploded into a ball of fire, injuring two people. The shocking incident, captured on CCTV, has since raised serious safety concerns.
The footage shows a woman in a white shirt entering the elevator first, pulling a small trolley bag and selecting her floor. Moments later, a balloon seller carrying a large polythene sack filled with over a dozen balloons struggles to enter. Noticing him, the woman makes space inside the lift. As the seller moves toward a corner, another man wearing a black shirt attempts to step in.
Within seconds, the balloons erupt in a massive fireball inside the confined elevator space. Flames briefly engulf the camera’s view, obscuring all three occupants. When visibility returns, the men and the woman are seen rushing out of the elevator in panic. The balloon seller loses his balance and stumbles to the floor while fleeing.
Police confirmed that both the man and the woman sustained burn injuries in the incident. A case has been registered against the balloon seller, and an investigation is underway to determine the type of gas used to fill the balloons. Authorities noted that while helium balloons are non-flammable, balloons filled with hydrogen are highly combustible and pose a severe risk, especially in enclosed spaces.
The incident has sparked renewed warnings about the dangers of using flammable gases in public areas and the need for stricter safety enforcement.
