Key Accused in 2024 Bangladesh Police Officer Killing Detained at Delhi Airport

New Delhi/Dhaka: A key suspect in the 2024 killing of a Hindu police officer in Bangladesh was detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi while allegedly attempting to flee to Europe, officials confirmed.

The accused, identified as Mahdi Ahmed Reza Hasan, was intercepted by immigration authorities upon arrival at the airport, acting on specific intelligence inputs regarding his travel plans. He was stopped before boarding a flight to Finland and subsequently taken into custody. Following the completion of formal procedures, he was deported to Bangladesh.

Alleged Admission and Social Media Video

Hasan had earlier purportedly claimed responsibility for the murder of Sub-Inspector Santosh Chowdhary in a video that circulated widely on social media. In the footage, he was seen making statements while seated inside a police station in Bangladesh, further intensifying public outrage over the incident.

The Killing of SI Santosh Chowdhary

Sub-Inspector Santosh Chowdhary was killed on August 5, 2024, at the Baniyachang Police Station in Bangladesh. His body was later found hanging from a tree in a chilling development that drew widespread condemnation.

The incident occurred during a period of intense unrest in Bangladesh following the ouster of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government. What began as student-led protests soon escalated into nationwide violence, with reports of attacks targeting minority communities, including Hindus, and acts of vandalism against places of worship.

A report by BBC Bangla initially suggested that the officer may have been “specifically targeted.” However, according to The Bangladesh Post, the report was later withdrawn.

Background: Protests and Political Turmoil

The unrest was triggered by widespread protests against Bangladesh’s controversial quota system, which reserved 30 per cent of government jobs for relatives and dependents of freedom fighters (Mukti Joddhas) who participated in the 1971 Liberation War.

The demonstrations, which began on university campuses, rapidly spread across the country and eventually culminated in the removal of the Awami League government from power.

Authorities in Bangladesh are expected to continue investigations into the killing and related incidents amid ongoing scrutiny over the violence that marked the period of political upheaval.
