Bahrain on Saturday confirmed that a missile attack targeted the headquarters of the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet in the island kingdom, marking a further escalation in the rapidly intensifying regional conflict. Authorities did not immediately provide details regarding casualties or damage.
According to reports, emergency sirens sounded across the capital, Manama, shortly after the incident. Bahrain’s Interior Ministry issued a mobile phone alert to residents stating, “The siren has been sounded due to a hazard.” AFP correspondents in the city confirmed hearing the warning alarms.
The Fifth Fleet, a critical component of U.S. naval operations in the Middle East, is headquartered in Bahrain and plays a central role in safeguarding maritime security in the Persian Gulf and surrounding waters.
Coordinated U.S.–Israeli Strikes on Iran
The development follows coordinated military strikes launched by the United States and Israel against Iran earlier on Saturday. The first reported strike occurred near offices associated with Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, in Tehran. Iranian state and local media reported additional strikes across multiple cities, with smoke seen rising over parts of the capital.
U.S. President Donald Trump said in a video posted on social media that the United States had begun “major combat operations in Iran.” He accused Tehran of continuing to advance its nuclear programme and developing missile capabilities capable of reaching the United States. Trump also appealed directly to the Iranian public, urging them to “take over your government.”
Acknowledging the risks of escalation, Trump stated that American casualties were possible, noting that “that often happens in war.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the joint operation as necessary to “remove an existential threat posed” by Iran. He added that the action would create conditions for the Iranian people to determine their own future.
Iran Launches Retaliatory Strikes
In response, Iran’s paramilitary Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that it had launched a “first wave” of drones and missiles targeting Israel. The scope of the retaliation and its impact were not immediately clear.
The targeting of U.S. military assets in Bahrain signals a dangerous widening of the conflict, raising concerns of broader regional destabilisation. With military actions unfolding across multiple fronts, international observers are closely monitoring developments amid fears of a protracted confrontation involving major powers in the Middle East.
