Amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington, the Embassy of India, Tehran on Monday issued a fresh advisory urging Indian nationals currently in Iran to leave the country using any available means of transport.
The advisory follows an earlier communication issued by the Government of India on January 5, 2026, during heightened unrest linked to the crackdown by Iran’s leadership under Ali Khamenei. Citing the evolving security situation, the embassy advised Indian citizens — including students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists — to depart Iran through commercial flights or other available transport options.
“All Indian citizens and Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) should exercise due caution, avoid areas of protests or demonstrations, remain in contact with the Embassy, and monitor local media for updates,” the advisory stated.
The mission has also urged Indian nationals to keep travel and immigration documents, including passports and identification papers, readily accessible. Those who have not yet registered with the embassy have been requested to do so through the designated online portal. In case of internet disruptions, families in India have been advised to complete the registration process on their behalf.
Emergency helpline numbers and an official email address have been shared to facilitate immediate assistance. The embassy reiterated its commitment to providing necessary support to Indian citizens in the region.
Rising Geopolitical Strain
The advisory comes against the backdrop of mounting fears of conflict in the Middle East. US President Donald Trump has reportedly told senior advisers that Washington could escalate military action against Iran if diplomatic efforts fail to curb Tehran’s nuclear programme. Reports indicate that the US administration is considering authorising a limited military strike aimed at compelling Iran to abandon its capacity to develop nuclear weapons.
According to international media reports, the proposed action would serve as a demonstration of US resolve should ongoing diplomatic negotiations not yield tangible progress.
The next round of talks between the two sides is scheduled to take place in Geneva, with mediation efforts involving Omani officials, including Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi. He has expressed hope that a diplomatic breakthrough can be achieved before any escalation of hostilities.
Previous negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme were held in Oman, amid repeated signals from Washington regarding a possible military buildup in the region.
Domestic Unrest in Iran
Meanwhile, internal tensions within Iran remain high. Over the weekend, students at several universities reportedly staged demonstrations, chanting anti-government slogans and clashing with counter-protesters. These incidents follow a broader protest movement last month that was met with a severe government crackdown.
With regional uncertainty deepening, the Indian government has taken precautionary steps to safeguard its citizens, advising vigilance and timely departure while closely monitoring further developments.
