A man in his 50s has died after being found unresponsive in a cell at a Garda station in Co Waterford in the early hours of Saturday morning.
In a statement, An Garda Síochána confirmed that the man, who was being held in custody, was discovered unresponsive in his cell. Garda members immediately sought urgent medical assistance.
Despite prompt resuscitation efforts by Garda personnel, medical staff and emergency responders who attended the scene, the man was later pronounced dead.
The County Coroner has been notified, and a post-mortem examination is expected to take place in due course.
In line with established procedures, the matter has been referred to Fiosrú — the Office of the Police Ombudsman — under Section 203(1) of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act. As the incident involves a death in custody, referral to the independent oversight body is mandatory.
“As this matter is being investigated by Fiosrú, An Garda Síochána is not in a position to comment further,” the Garda statement added.
Fiosrú was formally established on April 2, 2025, under the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act 2024. The body replaced the former Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) as part of broader reforms aimed at strengthening independent oversight of policing and enhancing public confidence in accountability mechanisms.
