Kochi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested an alleged operative of the banned Popular Front of India (PFI) upon his arrival at Kochi International Airport.
The accused, identified as Moitheenkutty, a native of Valanchery in Malappuram district, was taken into custody at Cochin International Airport shortly after he landed from abroad. According to the NIA, he is the 70th accused in an ongoing PFI-related terrorism case.
Investigators allege that Moitheenkutty served as a coordinator in the organisation’s arms training wing. The arrest follows a nationwide crackdown on the PFI, after which the organisation was banned by the Government of India. Officials state that the accused had left the country in the aftermath of the enforcement action and was subsequently declared a proclaimed offender. A reward had also been announced for information leading to his arrest.
Authorities said the accused returned to India from overseas, where he had reportedly been in hiding, and was detained immediately upon arrival.
The NIA further indicated that Moitheenkutty had previously been named as an accused in a high-profile assault case commonly referred to as the “hand-chopping case.” He is expected to be produced before the appropriate court following detailed interrogation.
Investigations into the wider network and related activities remain ongoing.
