Pappu Yadav Arrested in 31-Year-Old Case, Sent to Judicial Custody Amid Political Storm in Bihar

Patna: Independent MP from Purnia, Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav, was arrested in connection with a 31-year-old criminal case and, following court proceedings, was sent to judicial custody at Beur Central Jail on the orders of a Patna court.

The arrest and subsequent developments have triggered a major political controversy in Bihar, with questions raised over procedure, timing, and the MP’s deteriorating health.

Court Orders Judicial Custody with Medical Safeguards

After his arrest, Pappu Yadav was produced before the Patna Civil Court, where arguments were heard from both sides. Considering the seriousness of the case, the court ordered that he be sent to judicial custody. However, taking note of his health condition, the court issued specific instructions to ensure proper medical care, directing jail authorities to arrange treatment as required.

According to the administration, Yadav will receive treatment at Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) under continuous medical supervision. Officials stressed that no negligence would be tolerated and that he could be admitted to hospital if his condition warranted it. Strict security arrangements were put in place during his court production and transfer.

Health Concerns and Hospital Transfers

Following his arrest, Yadav was initially taken to Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) for a medical examination before being shifted to PMCH and later referred to IGIC. His legal team and personal secretary alleged that he was denied a bed at IGIMS and was made to lie on a stretcher throughout the night, raising allegations of medical negligence.

Administrative sources said a team of doctors is monitoring his condition and that further legal or custodial decisions will be taken only after medical assessments. Police personnel have also been deployed around the hospital premises to maintain security.

Midnight Arrest Sparks Controversy

The arrest took place late Friday night shortly after Pappu Yadav returned to Patna from Delhi following the Lok Sabha session. Police teams from multiple stations, some allegedly in civil attire, arrived at his residence, leading to high-voltage scenes and heated arguments.

Yadav claimed that he was not shown an arrest warrant and was instead presented with documents related to property attachment. He strongly objected to being taken into custody at night, citing poor health, and alleged procedural lapses in the police action.

At one point, he was heard shouting that his life was in danger and refused to accompany the police to a police station at night. Supporters gathered outside his residence, raising slogans and briefly escalating tensions, forcing police to deploy additional forces to control the situation.

Police Stand: Arrest Based on Court Warrant

Senior police officials, including City West SP Bhanu Pratap Singh and SSP Kartikeya Sharma, stated that the arrest was carried out strictly in compliance with a court-issued warrant. According to police, Yadav’s repeated failure to appear before the court constituted a violation of bail conditions, prompting the issuance of the warrant.

Police clarified that the case dates back to 1995, registered at the Gardanibagh police station, and pertains to allegations that Yadav fraudulently rented a house from landlord Vinod Bihari Lal for residential purposes but later converted it into a political office. Charges include cheating, forgery, criminal intimidation, and conspiracy, and the matter has been under consideration in an MP-MLA special court.

Legal Team Alleges Procedural Violations

Yadav’s lawyer, Shivanandan Bharati, alleged that the police action was legally flawed. He maintained that Yadav was already on bail in the 1995 case and claimed that due process under Sections 82 and 83 of the Criminal Procedure Code had not been properly followed before the arrest. The defence has termed the arrest illegal and announced plans to pursue bail vigorously.

Political Fallout and Allegations of Conspiracy

The arrest has sparked sharp reactions across Bihar’s political landscape. Supporters and opposition leaders have alleged a political conspiracy, claiming Yadav was targeted for recently criticising the government over sensitive issues, including the death of a NEET aspirant and conditions in girls’ hostels.

Social media posts by his supporters have gone further, alleging an attempt to intimidate or silence the MP, accusations the administration has strongly denied. Authorities insist that the case is being pursued strictly within the framework of law.

All Eyes on the Court

Pappu Yadav has filed a bail application, and the court’s decision in the coming hours will be crucial. Depending on the outcome, he may be released on bail or remain in custody, potentially in a hospital ward given his health condition.

As legal proceedings continue, the case has evolved into a high-stakes intersection of law, health, and politics, with implications extending well beyond the courtroom. The next judicial order is expected to play a decisive role not only in Yadav’s immediate future but also in shaping the political discourse in Bihar in the days ahead.
