Washington: US Secret Service officers have shot and killed a gunman who tried to break into US President Donald Trump's residence. The gunman broke into Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
A shotgun and a can of gasoline were reportedly found in his possession. US Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi confirmed the incident in a post shared on the Elmex platform. "Early this morning (Sunday), US Secret Service officers shot and killed a gunman who illegally entered the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago," his post read.
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sunday and the deceased was in his 20s, according to a statement released by the security agency. The young man entered the area without permission. Trump was not present at the time of the incident. The statement said that the man was shot by Secret Service officers and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office. No one else was injured in the incident, the officials said. 'The Secret Service reported that the man was found near the north gate of Mar-a-Lago with a shotgun and a can of gasoline. The identity of the deceased will be released only after the next of kin have been notified,' the statement said.
The FBI, the US Secret Service, and the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office are investigating the incident, including whether any force was used at the scene, and the background, activities, and motive of the deceased.
In accordance with agency policies, the Secret Service agents involved will be placed on regular administrative leave until the results of the investigation are released.
