Uttar Pradesh Police action against alleged cow slaughter and smuggling networks intensified in Bareilly, where two accused were injured and subsequently arrested during an encounter operation in the Bhojipura area.
Uttar PradeshAccording to police officials, the incident occurred late Tuesday night when a team from the Uttar Pradesh Police acted on intelligence inputs regarding the presence of a suspect in the Gangapur forest region. The accused, identified as Shakeel, along with his associate Saleem alias Kaliya, was reportedly planning further criminal activity.
Encounter Following Alleged Firing on Police
Police stated that when officers attempted to apprehend the suspects, they came under fire, prompting a retaliatory response in self-defence. During the exchange, both accused sustained gunshot injuries to their legs and were overpowered at the scene.
Officials added that following the encounter, the injured suspects were heard pleading for leniency and admitting wrongdoing.
Weapons Recovered, Criminal Background Cited
A search operation at the site led to the recovery of firearms, ammunition, and tools allegedly used for cattle slaughter. Police further stated that both individuals have prior criminal records, with Saleem reportedly facing around eight cases linked to similar offences.
One police personnel was also injured during the operation and was shifted to a nearby hospital for treatment. The arrested accused were admitted to a Community Health Centre and will be produced before a court following medical care.
Ongoing Crackdown After Public Outrage
The intensified police action follows recent incidents involving the discovery of cattle remains in the district, which triggered protests and unrest among local residents and groups. Authorities subsequently launched a sustained crackdown on suspected cow smuggling networks, carrying out multiple raids over the past few days.
A day earlier, three other accused were apprehended in a similar operation. Police officials have indicated that the campaign will continue until such illegal activities are fully curbed in the region.
Administrative Action Against Police Personnel
In a related development, seven police personnel from the Izzatnagar Police Station jurisdiction have been suspended for alleged negligence in handling the case.
The Senior Superintendent of Police has issued strict directives, emphasising that no leniency will be shown in cases related to cow slaughter and smuggling.
