India’s Fuel and LPG Supplies Fully Secure; Government Urges Public to Ignore Panic Rumours

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has reassured citizens that India’s fuel and LPG supplies remain fully secure, dismissing concerns triggered by misinformation circulating on social media.

In an official statement, the Ministry confirmed that all retail fuel outlets across the country are adequately stocked and operating without disruption. There is no rationing in place, and supplies of petrol and diesel remain stable nationwide.

Authorities noted that instances of panic buying reported in certain areas were driven by misleading online content rather than any actual shortage. To maintain uninterrupted supply, oil company depots have been functioning round the clock, while additional credit support has been extended to fuel stations.

India, the world’s fourth-largest refiner and fifth-largest exporter of petroleum products, continues to maintain a robust supply chain, catering not only to domestic demand but also exporting to over 150 countries.

Strong Supply Position Despite Global Tensions

Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, the Ministry emphasised that India’s crude sourcing remains diversified and resilient. The country currently imports crude oil from more than 41 suppliers, ensuring supply continuity.

All domestic refineries are operating at over 100% capacity, and fuel availability is secured well in advance. The government confirmed that supplies for the next 60 days are already in place, eliminating any immediate risk of disruption.

Clarifying speculation regarding stock levels, the Ministry stated that claims suggesting India has only six days of fuel reserves are “completely false.” In reality, the country maintains approximately 74 days of total reserve capacity, including strategic reserves, with around 60 days of actual stock currently available. Additional crude procurement is also underway to further strengthen reserves.

LPG Supply Remains Stable

On the LPG front, the government highlighted a significant increase in domestic production, which has risen by nearly 40% and now meets over 60% of daily demand.

To supplement domestic output, imports of approximately 800 thousand metric tonnes (TMT) have been secured from countries including the United States, Russia, and Australia. Oil marketing companies continue to deliver over 50 lakh LPG cylinders daily, with commercial allocations enhanced to prevent hoarding and ensure smooth distribution.

Expansion of Clean Energy Infrastructure

The Ministry also addressed the growing emphasis on Piped Natural Gas (PNG), describing it as a cleaner, safer, and more cost-effective alternative to conventional fuels.

India currently produces around 92 million metric standard cubic metres per day (MMSCMD) of natural gas, reducing reliance on imports. The expansion of city gas distribution networks has been significant, increasing from 57 areas in 2014 to over 300 today. Domestic PNG connections have similarly surged from 25 lakh to more than 1.5 crore households.

Call for Public Calm

Reiterating its assurance, the government urged citizens not to be misled by unverified information and to avoid unnecessary panic buying.

“The fuel and LPG supply situation in the country is stable and well-managed,” the Ministry said, adding that there is no cause for concern.
