US Considers Diverting Weapons from Ukraine to Middle East as Iran War Strains Military Resources

The United States is reportedly weighing a significant shift in its military priorities, considering the diversion of weapons originally designated for Ukraine to support operations in the Middle East amid the ongoing conflict with Iran.

According to a report by The Washington Post, the prolonged campaign against Iran has placed considerable strain on some of the most critical and limited munitions in the US arsenal. Among the systems under review for diversion are advanced air defence interceptors used in Patriot and Terminal High Altitude Area Defence (THAAD) systems—key assets currently supporting Ukraine under the NATO-backed Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL).

Sources familiar with internal discussions described the deliberations within the Pentagon as “active and ongoing,” reflecting the growing pressure on US military stockpiles.

Mounting Operational and Financial Pressure

The scale of ammunition consumption in the Iran conflict has been substantial. Since the launch of US-Israeli strikes on February 28, US Central Command has reportedly targeted over 9,000 sites within a span of four weeks.

The financial burden has also escalated rapidly. US officials estimate that at least $12 billion was spent in the first two weeks of the campaign, with daily operational costs approximating $2 billion. The Pentagon has since sought a supplemental budget of $200 billion from Congress to replenish depleted missile inventories and sustain ongoing operations.

Compounding the challenge is a production bottleneck. Defence manufacturer Lockheed Martin currently produces approximately 600 PAC-3 Patriot interceptors annually—a figure widely considered insufficient even prior to the Iran conflict. Although plans are in place to scale up production to 2,000 units per year, the increase will take time to materialise.

Strategic Assets Under Strain

The situation has been further exacerbated by the destruction of a critical AN/TPY-2 radar system at Muwaffaq Salti Air Base in Jordan early in the conflict. The radar plays a vital role in guiding THAAD missile defence systems, and its loss has increased reliance on already overstretched Patriot batteries.

With only eight THAAD batteries deployed globally, US defence capabilities are facing heightened operational stress. Analysts warn that there are no readily available replacements for such specialised equipment.

Implications for Ukraine

The potential redirection of military aid poses a significant challenge for Ukraine, which has relied heavily on Western-supplied air defence systems in its ongoing war with Russia. The PURL programme alone has accounted for approximately 75% of the missiles used in Ukraine’s Patriot systems over the past year.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently highlighted the disparity in resource allocation, noting that Middle Eastern allies reportedly expended more than 800 Patriot interceptors in just three days—exceeding Ukraine’s cumulative stockpile over four years of conflict.

Kyiv had attempted to offer a cost-effective alternative, proposing the deployment of domestically developed interceptor drones capable of neutralising Iranian-designed Shahed drones at a fraction of the cost of traditional missile systems. However, the proposal received a lukewarm response from Washington.

Broader Geopolitical Consequences

The shift in US military focus comes at a critical juncture in the Russia-Ukraine war. Intensifying Russian missile strikes and rising oil revenues—fueled in part by disruptions in global energy supply—have strengthened Moscow’s position.

At the same time, the redeployment of US defence assets from regions such as South Korea to the Middle East has raised concerns among allies about weakening regional deterrence capabilities.

Uncertain Path Ahead

Efforts to bring the Iran conflict to a diplomatic resolution remain inconclusive. The US has proposed a 15-point framework offering sanctions relief in exchange for curbs on Iran’s nuclear and missile programmes. However, Tehran has rejected the proposal, instead demanding compensation for war-related damages.

Amid ongoing hostilities and mounting strategic pressures, Washington’s reassessment of its military commitments underscores a broader reality: sustaining simultaneous conflicts across multiple theatres is placing unprecedented strain on US resources and reshaping global security dynamics.
