The ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel entered its 18th day on Tuesday, with both sides intensifying military operations and rhetoric, raising concerns of a broader regional escalation.
Donald Trump on Monday reiterated his appeal for international cooperation to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route. Despite the call, several U.S. allies have shown reluctance to support the initiative. Meanwhile, global oil prices eased by around 1 percent, reflecting cautious market sentiment.
Tensions were further underscored by reports of drone activity near Dubai International Airport, which led to flight disruptions and diversions. On the same day, Iranian media reported multiple explosions in Tehran, indicating an escalation in hostilities.
According to Amir Saeid Iravani, Iran’s Ambassador to the United Nations, more than 1,300 people have been killed in what he described as joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran. The reported casualties include senior officials and, notably, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, though such claims remain contested and have not been independently verified.
Iravani accused the United States and Israel of deliberately targeting civilians by striking densely populated residential areas and critical infrastructure.
Independent assessments suggest the toll could be significantly higher. The U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) estimates that at least 1,858 people, including both civilians and military personnel, may have been killed so far.
The conflict has also had spillover effects in neighboring regions. In Lebanon, at least 773 people have reportedly been killed in Israeli strikes since the Iran-backed Hezbollah launched attacks on Israel, according to the country’s Ministry of Public Health.
As hostilities continue, the situation remains fluid, with mounting casualties and increasing concern among the international community over the risk of a wider regional conflict.
