Israel: A major escalation in the ongoing West Asia conflict was witnessed on Saturday as Iranian ballistic missile barrages struck southern Israel, injuring nearly 100 people in the cities of Arad and Dimona. The attack occurred after at least two projectiles reportedly evaded interception by Israeli air defence systems, raising serious concerns about vulnerabilities in the country’s defensive shield.
Among the injured were several civilians, including a 12-year-old boy and a five-year-old girl, both said to be in critical condition. Emergency services reported that at least 68 people were wounded in Arad, with 10 in serious condition and 14 moderately injured. In Dimona, at least 27 individuals sustained injuries, including a teenager severely hurt by shrapnel.
A mass-casualty alert was declared at Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba as rescue teams rushed to multiple impact sites. According to Magen David Adom chief executive Eli Bin, several individuals were feared trapped under debris in Arad, describing the incident as “an event of enormous magnitude.” Rescue operations continued through the night amid concerns that the casualty count could rise.
Preliminary assessments indicate that one of the missiles, believed to be equipped with a conventional warhead weighing several hundred kilograms, struck a residential area, causing extensive structural damage and igniting fires in nearby buildings. Unverified reports suggested partial building collapses and people trapped inside, further complicating rescue efforts.
The Israel Defense Forces confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the failure to intercept the missile that struck Arad. IDF spokesperson Effie Defrin stated that while the air defence systems were activated, they did not successfully neutralise the incoming threat. A parallel probe has also been initiated by the Home Front Command.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the incident as a “very difficult evening” and reaffirmed that Israel would continue its military operations with determination. “We will continue to strike our enemies on all fronts,” he said in an official statement.
The strike on Dimona has drawn particular international attention due to the city’s proximity to the Shimon Peres Negev Nuclear Research Center, widely regarded as central to Israel’s undeclared nuclear programme. However, the International Atomic Energy Agency stated that it had detected no damage to the facility and no abnormal radiation levels.
Iranian state-linked media claimed the strikes were carried out in retaliation for alleged US-Israeli attacks on nuclear facilities in Bushehr and Natanz, though Israel has denied conducting any operation in Natanz. The head of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, reiterated calls for restraint, warning of the grave risks associated with military action near sensitive nuclear infrastructure.
As air raid sirens continued to sound intermittently across southern Israel, the latest strikes underscore the intensifying nature of the conflict and the growing risk of further escalation with potentially far-reaching regional and global consequences.
