A 30-year-old homeless man has been remanded in custody after appearing before the Dublin District Court on Saturday, accused of setting fire to a tent belonging to a woman who was also sleeping rough in central Dublin.
The accused, Jason Smith, faces a charge of criminal damage by arson in connection with an incident that allegedly occurred on Coles Lane on March 13. He has not yet entered a plea and is scheduled to appear in court again on March 18.
According to Garda Jordan Mulcahy, the prosecution is opposing bail. Addressing Catherine Ghent, the garda stated that high-quality CCTV footage from the Dublin 1 lane allegedly shows the accused pulling the woman’s tent before setting it alight.
The court heard that the tent was unoccupied at the time of the incident. Garda Mulcahy further alleged that the accused added cardboard to the fire in an apparent attempt to keep it burning.
The tent belonged to a woman reportedly suffering from health issues, and the structure was completely destroyed in the blaze. Authorities are currently awaiting an assessment of the cost required to clean and restore the affected public pathway.
Legal aid was granted to Smith during the hearing. His defence counsel, barrister Kevin McCrave, informed the court that his client would defer making a bail application at this stage.
The tent’s owner was not present during the court proceedings.
