Two brothers were critically injured after being attacked with knives during a robbery attempt at a grocery shop in the Tigri area of Delhi on Sunday evening, police said.
According to officials, the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Tigri police station when two assailants entered the shop with the intent to loot cash from the counter. When the shop owners resisted, the attackers launched a violent assault before fleeing the scene.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Anant Mittal confirmed that the accused had targeted the shop with the intention of robbery. “When the two brothers present in the shop attempted to prevent the theft, the assailants attacked them with knives and fled after inflicting multiple stab wounds,” he said.
Victims in Critical Condition
The injured have been identified as Praveen (43) and Vikas (38), residents of the Krishna Park area near a local temple. Both run the grocery store where the attack took place.
According to their statement to the police, the incident occurred around 3:30 pm when the accused attempted to steal cash from the register. When Praveen intervened, one of the attackers stabbed him in the abdomen. Hearing the commotion, his younger brother Vikas rushed to assist, but he too was attacked.
The assailants reportedly stabbed the brothers multiple times—nearly half a dozen—before escaping with their weapons as local residents gathered at the scene.
Both victims were immediately rushed to a nearby hospital and admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU), where they remain in critical condition. Doctors later indicated that their condition has shown some improvement due to timely medical intervention.
Police Launch Investigation Amid Public Anger
Police teams reached the spot soon after receiving information and have registered a case. An investigation is currently underway, with officers examining CCTV footage from nearby cameras to identify and apprehend the suspects.
The incident has sparked anger among local residents, who allege a rising trend of crime in the area and have criticised the lack of strict preventive action by authorities.
Law enforcement officials have assured that efforts are ongoing to trace the accused and that appropriate action will be taken once they are identified.
