Kolkata: A late-night rooftop gathering in the Patuli area turned tragic after a dispute escalated into gunfire, leaving one man dead and another critically injured, police said.
The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. at a residential building in the East Phoolbagan locality. The deceased has been identified as 35-year-old Rahul Dey, who had visited the apartment of his friend Jeet Mukherjee. A group had reportedly assembled on the terrace for a party, where they were eating and drinking.
According to preliminary reports, an argument broke out among those present, which quickly escalated into a violent confrontation. During the altercation, unidentified assailants opened fire, seriously injuring Rahul Dey and Jeet Mukherjee.
Both victims were rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared Rahul Dey dead on arrival. Jeet Mukherjee remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment.
Police said the attackers have not yet been identified, and the exact motive behind the shooting remains unclear. However, initial findings suggest the incident may have stemmed from a personal dispute.
Authorities have ruled out any immediate political angle and have launched a detailed investigation. CCTV footage from the area is being examined, and residents are being questioned to gather further leads.
The incident has sparked concern among local residents, with police stepping up efforts to trace those responsible.
