Iran has appointed senior military figure Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as the new Secretary of its Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), replacing Ali Larijani, in a significant leadership shift amid the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Zolghadr, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), assumes charge of one of Iran’s most powerful institutions, responsible for shaping key decisions related to defence, nuclear policy, and foreign affairs. His appointment comes at a critical juncture for Tehran, following the death of Larijani in recent strikes, an event that has considerably altered the country’s top leadership structure.
The Supreme National Security Council plays a central role in coordinating Iran’s military and strategic responses, particularly during periods of heightened conflict, making the position one of the most influential within the nation’s power hierarchy.
The elevation of a figure closely associated with the IRGC is widely seen as indicative of a continued shift towards a more security-centric leadership framework in Iran, especially as tensions with the United States and Israel remain elevated.
This appointment forms part of a broader reshuffle within Iran’s leadership amid ongoing military escalation, with several senior officials reported to have been killed in recent weeks. Zolghadr’s rise is expected to further consolidate the influence of the Revolutionary Guards in Iran’s decision-making apparatus, as the country navigates one of the most volatile phases in its recent history.
