New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has achieved a historic milestone, becoming the longest-serving head of government in India. On Sunday, he surpassed the record previously held by Pawan Kumar Chamling, marking a significant moment in the country’s political history.
Chamling had served for 8,930 days as Chief Minister of Sikkim, while Modi has now completed 8,931 days in public office as head of government—combining his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and his time as Prime Minister of India. The achievement underscores Modi’s enduring presence and sustained leadership across both state and national levels.
Modi began his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001, holding the position for over a decade before assuming office as Prime Minister in 2014. He remains the longest-serving Chief Minister in Gujarat’s history and is the only Prime Minister to have had such extensive prior experience in that role. Notably, he is also the first Indian Prime Minister born after the country’s independence in 1947.
A defining feature of Modi’s political career has been his electoral success. Under his leadership, the Bharatiya Janata Party secured victories in three consecutive Lok Sabha elections—2014, 2019, and 2024—consolidating his position as a dominant force in national politics. He is also the only non-Congress leader to complete two full terms as Prime Minister.
In July 2025, Modi surpassed former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to become the second-longest-serving Prime Minister in consecutive terms, completing 4,078 days in uninterrupted office—one day more than Gandhi’s tenure between 1966 and 1977. The record for the longest continuous term remains with India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru.
Modi has also equalled Nehru in leading his party to victory in three successive general elections, a rare feat in Indian politics. As an elected head of government at both the state and national levels, he now holds the longest cumulative tenure in Indian history.
Born in Vadnagar, Gujarat, into a modest family, Modi’s early life was marked by humble beginnings, including assisting his father in selling tea at a railway station. He later rose through the ranks of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh before transitioning into active politics with the BJP.
Known for his strong communication skills and grassroots connect, Modi has, since 2014, positioned India as a more assertive and influential voice on the global stage. His leadership continues to shape the country’s political landscape, both domestically and internationally.
