Tehran: Natanz Nuclear Facility, Iran’s primary uranium enrichment site, was struck in an air raid on Saturday, according to the country’s official news agency, Mizan News Agency. Authorities stated that no radiation leakage was detected following the attack.
The strike comes as the ongoing conflict in West Asia enters its fourth week, with hostilities continuing to intensify and no immediate signs of de-escalation.
Located approximately 220 kilometres southeast of Tehran, the Natanz facility has long been a focal point in regional tensions. It had previously sustained damage earlier in the conflict, with satellite imagery indicating structural impacts on multiple buildings. At that time, the International Atomic Energy Agency confirmed that there were “no radiological consequences” from the earlier strike.
The facility has also been targeted in past confrontations, including during the 2025 Iran-Israel hostilities and prior US-led operations, underscoring its strategic significance.
Mixed Signals from Washington
The latest developments coincide with evolving signals from the United States. President Donald Trump indicated on Friday that Washington may consider “winding down” its military operations in the region. However, this stance contrasts with a concurrent military buildup, including the deployment of three additional amphibious assault ships and approximately 2,500 Marines.
Trump’s remarks followed reported threats from Iran to target recreational and tourist locations globally, heightening concerns over a broader escalation of the conflict.
Energy and Market Implications
In parallel, the US administration has taken steps to stabilise global energy markets by easing sanctions on Iranian oil already loaded onto tankers. The move comes amid rising crude prices and increased volatility in global financial markets, including US equities.
Escalation Across the Region
On the ground, hostilities continue unabated. Israel reported that Iran launched a fresh wave of missile strikes early Saturday. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia stated that it intercepted approximately 20 drones over its eastern region within a matter of hours—an area critical to its oil infrastructure.
The escalation follows Israeli airstrikes on Tehran during Nowruz celebrations, casting a shadow over what is traditionally a period of festivity and renewal.
A Prolonged and Dangerous Phase
With repeated strikes on critical infrastructure—including nuclear facilities—the conflict appears to be entering a more volatile and protracted phase. Analysts warn that the combination of military escalation, energy market disruptions, and geopolitical uncertainty could have far-reaching consequences for regional and global stability.
