Noida International Airport Set to Begin Commercial Operations Within 60 Days

Noida: Commercial flight operations from the Noida International Airport are expected to commence within the next 45 to 60 days, Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announced on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters following the inauguration of the airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh, Naidu said that final preparations are underway to operationalise the facility, with a particular focus on completing security arrangements. “Flight operations from the airport would start in 45 to 60 days,” he said, noting that the installation of necessary security systems is progressing steadily.

The airport was formally inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking a significant milestone for one of India’s largest greenfield aviation projects. Located in the Gautam Buddh Nagar district, the facility is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening aviation infrastructure across the National Capital Region.

Final Preparations Underway

According to the minister, security planning remains one of the final steps before commercial operations begin. The airport has already secured an aerodrome licence from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), bringing it closer to full operational readiness.

With regulatory approvals in place, authorities are now focused on aligning infrastructure, operational systems and safety protocols for passenger services. The airport is equipped with advanced navigation systems, including Instrument Landing System (ILS) technology and modern airfield lighting, ensuring safe operations even under low-visibility conditions.

The 3,900-metre runway is capable of handling wide-body aircraft, paving the way for both domestic and international flight operations.

A Major Greenfield Aviation Hub

Developed in four phases, the Noida International Airport is poised to emerge as a key aviation hub in northern India. In its initial phase, the airport will be able to handle approximately 12 million passengers annually. Upon full completion, its total capacity is projected to reach 70 million passengers per year, placing it among the country’s largest airports.

The first phase has been developed at an estimated cost of ₹11,200 crore under a public-private partnership model and will be operated by Yamuna International Airport Pvt Ltd (YIAPL), a subsidiary of Zurich Airport International AG.

Infrastructure in the initial phase includes a terminal building spanning 1,37,985 square metres, equipped with 48 check-in counters and designed to handle up to 30 flight movements per hour during peak operations. The airport will also support cargo services, with an initial handling capacity of approximately 2.5 lakh tonnes, alongside 28 aircraft stands to facilitate simultaneous operations.

Focus on Long-Term Growth

The project also incorporates long-term infrastructure development, including dedicated Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities. Over 40 acres of land have been earmarked for this purpose, with a strategic partnership already announced between NIA and Akasa Air to establish an MRO unit.

Originally scheduled to become operational in September 2024, the revised timeline now points to a launch within the next two months. The minister’s remarks indicate that final operational readiness activities are nearing completion.

Once operational, the Noida International Airport is expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity, expand aviation capacity, and support both passenger and cargo traffic across northern India.
