New Delhi: Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia is set to implement another round of workforce reductions as part of a broader effort to streamline both its global and Indian operations, according to a report by Moneycontrol.
The company is reportedly considering reducing its global workforce by up to 20% from its current headcount of approximately 74,100 employees. Given that Nokia employs over 17,700 people in India, the restructuring is expected to have implications for its India operations as well.
Shift Back to Earlier Organisational Structure
Nokia is said to be reverting to its pre-2023 horizontal organisational structure after an earlier shift to a vertical model failed to deliver the expected efficiencies. As part of the restructuring, the company is being reorganised into two core divisions: Network Infrastructure and Mobile Infrastructure.
Reasons Behind the Layoffs
According to sources cited in the report, the restructuring involves the merger of Nokia’s Cloud and Network Services (CNS) and Mobile Networks (MN) units. This integration has reportedly led to overlapping roles and duplication of functions across teams.
Employees working in business segments considered non-core to the company’s strategic priorities are expected to be most affected by the downsizing.
Leadership Changes in India
Nokia has also announced significant leadership changes in its India operations, effective April 2026. Samer Mittal has been promoted as India Country Business Leader, while Vibha Mehra has been appointed as India Country Manager. Tarun Chhabra has stepped down from his role as India Country Head.
Workforce Trends Over the Years
The company’s global workforce has seen a steady decline in recent years:
- 2018: 103,000 employees (post-Alcatel-Lucent acquisition)
- 2024: 75,600 employees
- 2025 (estimated): 74,100 employees
The latest restructuring underscores Nokia’s ongoing efforts to optimise operations and realign its business structure in response to evolving industry demands and competitive pressures.
