The opening match of the Indian Premier League 2026 witnessed a commanding performance from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), who secured a six-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Saturday, March 28.
After winning the toss, RCB elected to field first, inviting SRH to set a target. The Hyderabad side endured an unsteady start but managed to post a competitive total of 201 for 9 in their allotted 20 overs. The innings was anchored by captain Ishan Kishan, who delivered an explosive knock of 80 runs off just 38 balls, featuring eight boundaries and five sixes. He was ably supported by Aniket Verma, who contributed a valuable 43 runs.
In response, RCB chased down the 202-run target with remarkable ease, reaching 203 for 4 with 26 deliveries to spare. The chase was led by Virat Kohli, who remained unbeaten on 69, showcasing his trademark consistency and composure. His innings included five fours and five sixes.
Complementing Kohli’s effort was an aggressive display from Devdutt Padikkal, who scored a blistering 61 off just 26 balls. Padikkal’s innings, studded with seven boundaries and four sixes, played a crucial role in accelerating RCB’s chase and sealing the victory in emphatic fashion.
Earlier, RCB’s bowling unit delivered a disciplined performance to restrict SRH despite the strong individual contributions. Jacob Duffy emerged as the standout performer, claiming three wickets for 22 runs in his four overs. He was well supported by Romario Shepherd, who also picked up three wickets.
Despite a spirited batting effort from SRH, RCB’s all-round performance ensured a dominant start to their IPL 2026 campaign.
