Putin Reaffirms Russia’s ‘Unwavering Support’ for Iran, Congratulates Mojtaba Khamenei as New Supreme Leader

Vladimir Putin on Monday reaffirmed Russia’s “unwavering” support for Iran amid the escalating conflict involving the United States and Israel.

The Russian president also congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on his appointment as Iran’s new Supreme Leader following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.

According to remarks reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP), Putin emphasised that Moscow would continue to stand firmly alongside Tehran during the ongoing crisis.

“I wish to confirm unwavering support for Tehran and solidarity with our Iranian friends,” Putin said.

Message to Iran’s New Leader

In a message congratulating Mojtaba Khamenei on assuming the country’s highest office, Putin expressed confidence that the new leader would continue his father’s legacy and guide the Iranian nation through the current challenges.

“I am confident that you will continue your father’s work with honour and unite the Iranian people in the face of severe trials,” Putin said.

He added that the leadership role would require courage and determination at a time when Iran faces intense external pressure.

“At a time when Iran is confronting armed aggression, your tenure in this high position will undoubtedly require great courage and dedication,” the Russian leader noted.

Condolences Over Khamenei’s Death

Earlier, during a phone conversation on Friday with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Putin conveyed his condolences over the killing of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, along with several members of his family, senior Iranian political and military figures, and numerous civilians.

According to the Kremlin, the Russian president reiterated Moscow’s position that disputes surrounding Iran should be resolved through dialogue rather than military force.

Putin also reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to working toward de-escalation and the cessation of hostilities in the region.

President Pezeshkian, for his part, reportedly thanked Russia for its solidarity with the Iranian people as they defend what he described as the country’s sovereignty and independence.

Iran Names New Supreme Leader

Iran formally announced the appointment of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei as the Islamic Republic’s new Supreme Leader on Monday.

Born in 1969 in the holy city of Mashhad in eastern Iran, Mojtaba is one of six children of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. His elevation to the country’s top political and religious position comes at a time of heightened regional tensions and intensifying military confrontation.

Meanwhile, Israeli officials have warned that they would continue pursuing Iran’s leadership structure despite the transition in power, underscoring the volatile geopolitical environment surrounding the appointment.

The development adds a new dimension to the widening conflict in West Asia, as global powers closely monitor the evolving political and military dynamics in the region.
