Popular dairy brand Milky Mist has come under scrutiny on social media after a doctor in Hyderabad raised concerns about a packet of paneer that appeared swollen despite being well within its expiry date.
The doctor shared her experience on X (Twitter), posting a photograph of the puffed-up packet and questioning why the product seemed to have spoiled even though it had been stored properly.
Doctor Raises Concern Over Product Quality
According to the post, the doctor had purchased the paneer from Ratnadeep Supermarket and refrigerated it shortly after returning home. She stated that the cold chain was maintained, as the product was placed in the refrigerator within 15 minutes of purchase.
In her post, she wrote that the Milky Mist High Protein Paneer packet had swollen even though it still had nearly two weeks left before its expiry date. She further noted that a regular paneer packet from the same brand, purchased a few days earlier, had also puffed up despite having ten days remaining before its expiry.
The doctor emphasised that other products bought during the same shopping trip — including cheese and tofu — remained unaffected, suggesting that storage conditions at her end were not the cause.
“This never happened with any paneer before, not even with Milky Mist. This is the first time two different Milky Mist paneer packets appear spoiled,” she wrote.
Social Media Users Share Similar Experiences
The post quickly gained traction online, prompting several users to share their own experiences with packaged dairy products.
One user claimed they had encountered quality issues with Milky Mist paneer in the past and eventually switched to freshly prepared paneer from a local home-based supplier, noting a significant difference between packaged and homemade varieties.
Another commenter highlighted the potential health implications, stating that protein-rich foods are beneficial only when they are safe to consume, warning that spoiled paneer could lead to digestive problems.
Some users also pointed to broader concerns about the reliability of packaged dairy products, while a few retailers commented that they had noticed similar swelling in paneer packets and had raised complaints about possible quality or handling issues along the supply chain.
Why Paneer Packets May Swell Before Expiry
Experts note that several factors could cause packaged paneer to swell before its listed expiry date.
One of the most common reasons is a disruption in the cold chain during transportation or storage. If the product is exposed to temperatures above the recommended range at any stage — whether during transit, at the warehouse, or in retail storage — it may begin to spoil prematurely.
Another potential cause is microbial activity. When bacteria grow inside dairy products, they break down lactose and other components, releasing gases that can cause sealed packaging to expand or puff up.
Contamination during manufacturing or packaging can also accelerate spoilage. In some cases, a compromised or defective seal may allow air or bacteria to enter the packet, leading to early deterioration of the product.
As discussions continue online, the incident has once again drawn attention to quality control and cold-chain management in the packaged dairy sector.
