New Delhi: India’s External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar on Monday said that India’s energy security and the safety of its citizens abroad remain the government’s highest priorities as the conflict in West Asia continues to escalate.
Addressing the Rajya Sabha during the ongoing Budget Session of Parliament of India, Jaishankar emphasised that safeguarding national interests remains paramount in the government’s approach to the evolving crisis.
“The interest of Indians is the top priority. Our national interests will always be paramount,” the minister said.
West Asia Critical to India’s Energy Security
Jaishankar underlined the strategic importance of West Asia for India, noting that the region plays a crucial role in ensuring the country’s energy supplies.
“There are nearly one crore Indians living and working in the Gulf nations. In Iran as well, there are a few thousand Indians pursuing studies or employment. The region is key to our energy security and includes several major suppliers of oil and gas,” he told lawmakers.
The minister warned that the intensifying conflict could potentially lead to energy supply disruptions and broader economic instability.
Growing Concerns Over Regional Stability
Describing the situation as a matter of serious concern, Jaishankar said India has significant stakes in maintaining stability in West Asia.
“This ongoing conflict is of particular concern to India. We are a neighbouring region and have obvious stakes in ensuring that West Asia remains stable,” he said.
He cautioned that the consequences of the war could extend well beyond the immediate theatre of conflict.
“Serious supply chain disruptions and a climate of instability are major concerns,” the minister noted.
Security Situation Worsening
Highlighting the deteriorating security environment, Jaishankar said the conflict has intensified significantly and is affecting daily life across several countries in the region.
“The conflict has continued to intensify, and the security situation in the region has deteriorated significantly. It has spread to other countries with mounting destruction. Normal life and economic activities are visibly affected,” he said.
India has been closely monitoring developments in the region, particularly given the large Indian diaspora and the country’s dependence on energy imports from West Asian suppliers.
The government is expected to continue diplomatic engagement and contingency planning as the conflict evolves.
