Man Arrested in Madhya Pradesh’s Shahdol for Allegedly Exploiting Tribal Woman on Marriage Promise

A case of alleged sexual exploitation under the pretext of marriage has been reported from Shahdol district in Madhya Pradesh, where a man was arrested after a tribal woman accused him of deceiving her and later refusing to marry her on caste grounds.

According to police, the accused, identified as Kanha Chelani, is alleged to have developed a relationship with the woman and repeatedly engaged in physical relations on the assurance of marriage. The victim has claimed that the relationship was sustained on the promise of marriage, which had even progressed to the stage where a wedding date was reportedly fixed for February 14, 2026, and invitation cards were printed.

However, the woman alleged that when the time for marriage approached, the accused and his family refused to proceed with the wedding, citing caste differences. Following the alleged refusal, she approached the Budhar police station on February 10 and filed a complaint.

Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

Budhar police station in-charge Vinay Singh confirmed that the main accused has been arrested and produced before the court, where he was remanded to judicial custody. His brother, Ashish, had reportedly been arrested earlier in connection with the case.

Further investigation is underway.
