CHURACHANDPUR – Tensions remain high in Manipur’s Churachandpur district after a routine road traffic accident escalated into a violent confrontation between local residents and security forces. Authorities have confirmed the arrest of five individuals in connection with arson and rioting that broke out late Wednesday.
The Incident
According to police reports, the unrest was triggered by a collision involving a security force vehicle and a scooter at approximately 6:30 PM on Wednesday. Two individuals on the scooter sustained injuries and were immediately transported to a local hospital.
While both victims were discharged after receiving primary treatment, a subsequent medical examination revealed that both the rider and the pillion passenger were under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
Escalation and Arson
News of the accident spread rapidly throughout the locality, prompting an immediate and aggressive gathering of residents. The protest quickly turned violent in the Tuibong Bazaar area, where mobs targeted security personnel.
The situation spiraled into chaos as rioters:
Targeted Vehicles: At least two security vehicles were intercepted, vandalized, and set ablaze.
Clashed with Authorities: Several security personnel sustained serious injuries during the physical confrontation with the mob.
Property Damage: Significant damage was reported to various government assets in the vicinity.
Security Response and Legal Action
Additional forces were deployed to the site to contain the arson and restore order. Following a preliminary investigation into the rioting, the police conducted raids resulting in the arrest of five suspects. They face charges related to assault on security forces, destruction of public property, and arson.
"We are currently identifying other key instigators through available footage and eyewitness accounts," a senior police official stated. "Stringent legal action will be taken against those found guilty of disrupting public peace."
Surveillance has been intensified across the district to prevent further flare-ups, and the situation is currently reported to be under close monitoring.
