Violent Incidents Mar Holi Celebrations in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh; Several Injured

NAGPUR / BARABANKI — While much of the nation celebrated Holi on Wednesday, two separate incidents of violence have highlighted the darker side of the festivities. In Maharashtra, a young child suffered life-threatening burns following a domestic dispute, while a violent communal clash in Uttar Pradesh left nearly a dozen people injured.

Grandmother Detained After Scalding Toddler in Nagpur

In the Koradi area of Nagpur, a four-year-old boy, identified as Om, was hospitalized with critical injuries after his grandmother allegedly poured boiling water over him. The incident occurred on March 3 in the Aramshin area and was reportedly triggered when the child accidentally sprayed paint on her while playing.

According to police sources and CCTV footage, the grandmother, Sindhu Thackeray, was preparing water heated over a traditional Holi bonfire. Enraged by the paint, she doused the toddler with the boiling contents of her bucket.

  • Medical Status: The child suffered approximately 45% burns, primarily below the waist. He is currently undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Nagpur.

  • Legal Action:

Authorities have reviewed the footage, which shows the child shrieking in pain before bystanders attempted to provide first aid with cold water. Nagpur police have initiated the process to register a formal offence against Thackeray.

11 Injured in Violent Group Clash in Barabanki

In a separate incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district, a dispute over the application of colors escalated into a brutal confrontation between two groups. What began as a verbal altercation quickly turned physical, involving the use of sticks, batons, and iron rods.

The clash, which lasted approximately ten minutes, caused widespread panic in the locality before neighbors were able to intervene.

  • Casualties: At least 11 individuals sustained various injuries during the melee.

  • Home Invasion Claims: One local resident, Avdhesh, alleged that members of the rival group forcibly entered his home and assaulted his family members in the absence of the men of the house.

Local police have since restored order in the area. Investigations are ongoing in both districts to identify and charge the primary aggressors.

Analysis of Festival Safety

These incidents underscore a growing concern for law enforcement during major public holidays. While Holi is celebrated as a festival of joy, officials continue to urge citizens to maintain restraint and report disputes to the authorities immediately rather than resorting to retaliatory violence.
