CJI Issues Stern Warning During Hearing on West Bengal Electoral Revision Case

New Delhi, March 10: The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday heard arguments in connection with the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, during which the Chief Justice delivered strong remarks regarding allegations made against judicial officers supervising the process.

Presiding over the hearing, Surya Kant emphasised that the revision exercise is being conducted under the supervision of judicial officers and assured that all legitimate voters would be included in the electoral rolls.

The Chief Justice made it clear that unauthorised individuals or intruders would not be allowed to participate in the electoral process, reiterating that the revision aims to ensure accuracy and fairness in the voter list.

Warning Against Allegations on Judiciary

Expressing strong displeasure over accusations directed at judicial officers involved in the process, the Chief Justice said such remarks were unacceptable.

“As Chief Justice, I will not tolerate this. I am issuing a stern warning,” he said, stressing that the integrity of judicial officers should not be questioned without credible basis.

The court also observed that petitions raising premature concerns could undermine public confidence in the system.

Court Questions Timing of Petition

During the hearing, the Chief Justice noted that the petition appeared to be premature, pointing out that the exercise involved a large number of individuals.

“This concerns nearly 52 lakh people. Now this game starts… This is a premature petition,” he remarked.

The court was informed that the verification process related to approximately 10 lakh individuals had already been completed.

Responding to the submissions, the Chief Justice advised the petitioners to allow the process to continue before raising objections.

“As far as you are concerned, wait and watch. Filing a petition in advance sends the wrong signal that you do not have faith in the system,” he said.

Assurance on Electoral Integrity

Reaffirming the objective of the revision exercise, the Chief Justice said the process would ensure that all eligible voters are included while those illegally listed are removed.

“Those who are genuine and valid voters will be included. Those who are intruders will be excluded,” he stated.

The court’s observations come amid heightened political and legal scrutiny over the revision of electoral rolls in West Bengal, a process that authorities say is aimed at maintaining the integrity of the state’s electoral system.
