Sikkim: A startling incident from Gangtok has left both authorities and residents shocked, after a 14-year-old schoolgirl allegedly orchestrated her own kidnapping in an attempt to extort money from her family.
According to preliminary reports, the teenager left her home on March 13 as usual to attend school but failed to return by evening. Concerned family members initiated a search on their own, but when their efforts yielded no results, they approached the police and filed a missing complaint.
The situation escalated dramatically when the family received a phone call from an unknown number. The caller claimed that the girl had been abducted and demanded a ransom of ₹3 lakh for her release. The caller also issued threats, warning that failure to pay would endanger the girl’s life. The alarming call created panic within the family, prompting immediate police intervention.
Treating the case with urgency, law enforcement agencies launched a coordinated investigation, utilising call detail records and location tracking to trace the source of the communication. Their efforts soon led them beyond state borders.
During the course of the investigation, police traced the girl’s location to Siliguri in neighbouring West Bengal. Further inquiries revealed that the alleged abduction had been staged by the girl herself.
Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances and motivations behind the act, while also examining any potential external involvement.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the growing influence of digital communication and the need for greater awareness among adolescents regarding the legal and psychological consequences of such actions.
