New Delhi: Amid rising tensions in West Asia, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday held a series of high-level discussions with key global leaders, underscoring India’s concern over the deteriorating regional security environment and calling for urgent de-escalation.
In separate telephonic conversations with the Amir of Qatar, the President of France, and the leaders of Jordan, Oman, and Malaysia, the Prime Minister emphasised the urgent need for dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace, stability, and security in the region.
A key concern highlighted during these engagements was the safety of critical energy infrastructure and the importance of ensuring uninterrupted maritime trade. Modi strongly condemned recent attacks on energy facilities, warning that such actions could further escalate tensions.
India also reiterated its firm position on maintaining safe and free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial global energy corridor.
Engagement with Regional and Global Leaders
In his conversation with Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of Qatar, Prime Minister Modi conveyed warm Eid greetings and reaffirmed India’s solidarity with the Gulf nation. He also expressed appreciation for the continued support extended to the Indian diaspora.
Similarly, during his discussion with King Abdullah II of Jordan, Modi conveyed festive greetings and stressed the importance of coordinated diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation. Both leaders underscored the need to safeguard the uninterrupted flow of goods and energy supplies. Modi also acknowledged Jordan’s assistance in facilitating the safe return of Indian nationals affected by the conflict.
In his interaction with Emmanuel Macron, the Prime Minister highlighted the urgency of de-escalation and reaffirmed the importance of sustained international coordination to promote peace and stability.
A separate conversation with Sultan Haitham bin Tariq of Oman focused on strengthening diplomatic engagement to reduce tensions. Modi reiterated India’s condemnation of any violation of Oman’s sovereignty and appreciated its efforts in assisting the evacuation of affected individuals, including Indian citizens.
With Anwar Ibrahim, the Prime Minister exchanged greetings ahead of Hari Raya Aidilfitri and discussed the evolving situation in West Asia. Both leaders reaffirmed their shared commitment to resolving the crisis through peaceful dialogue.
Broader Diplomatic Outreach
These engagements form part of India’s broader diplomatic outreach following the escalation triggered by military actions involving the United States and Israel against Iran on February 28, and the subsequent retaliatory measures by Tehran.
Since the onset of the crisis, Prime Minister Modi has remained in close contact with leaders across the Gulf and beyond, including those of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, and Iran. Notably, the recent conversations marked his first direct engagements with President Macron and Prime Minister Ibrahim since the conflict began.
India’s diplomatic posture continues to emphasise restraint, dialogue, and the protection of critical global supply chains, particularly in the energy sector, amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.
