An Emirates flight from Dublin to Dubai with 172 passengers, including Indians, had to return early this morning due to the closure of the airspace over the Gulf city.
Dubai International Airport has been suspended after a drone hit a fuel tank and caught fire. Authorities said the fire was quickly brought under control and no one was injured.
Dublin Airport operator DAA confirmed this morning that there could be "further disruption" as they urged passengers to contact their airline directly about the status of their flight.
The diverted flight departed Dublin at 9pm last night and was flying over Egypt at the time of the diversion, and arrived safely back at Dublin Airport at approximately 7am this morning, the DAA's media operations said.
There are potential for further disruption to flights between Dublin Airport and the Middle East today. As always, passengers should check the latest status of their flights.
Irish Embassy warning
The Irish Embassy in the UAE has warned Irish citizens that any photos or postings on social media of drone or missile attacks will be considered illegal by local state authorities and subject to punishment. This also applies to Qatar and Kuwait.
"Irish citizens who violate these laws may be subject to fines, imprisonment and deportation," the embassy said.
“We request that all Irish citizens continue to follow the advice of local authorities and follow official news sources".
