Political Row Erupts as BJP Slams Kharge Over ‘Illiterate’ Remark in Keralam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM — A fierce war of words has broken out between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress ahead of the Keralam state elections, following controversial remarks by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge.

The BJP has accused the Congress leadership of employing a "divisive strategy" that insults the intelligence of voters in Gujarat and Northern India.

Kharge Challenges Modi and Vijayan

The controversy began during a campaign rally on Sunday, where Mallikarjun Kharge accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Keralam Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan of attempting to centralize power. Kharge claimed that while the leaders might succeed in "fooling" voters elsewhere, the high literacy rate in Keralam makes the state's electorate immune to such tactics.

"Don’t misguide the people of Keralam. They are very clever and educated," Kharge stated. "Modi ji and Vijayan, you both can fool people who are illiterate in Gujarat or in other places, but you cannot fool the people of Keralam."

BJP Hits Back: "A Deliberate Strategy to Divide"

Responding to the remarks, BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi held a press conference to condemn what he described as a pattern of regional elitism within the Congress party. Trivedi argued that Kharge’s comments were not accidental but part of a broader ideological push to create a rift between North and South India.

Key points from the BJP’s rebuttal include:

  • Questioning Historical Figures: Trivedi challenged Kharge to clarify his stance on iconic leaders from Gujarat and the North, including Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, and even former Congress Prime Ministers Jawaharlal Nehru and Indira Gandhi.
  • Allegations of Regionalism: The BJP cited past statements from Congress leaders—including P. Chidambaram and the Chief Minister of Telangana—regarding tax distribution and regional "DNA" as evidence of a "deliberate strategy" to undermine national unity.
  • Keralam’s "Enlightenment": Trivedi countered that the people of Keralam are indeed enlightened, which is why they are increasingly turning toward the BJP, citing recent municipal successes in Thiruvananthapuram as a sign of shifting political tides.

The Road to the Polls

The escalating rhetoric comes at a critical juncture for Keralam, which is set to go to the polls on April 9. With the counting of votes scheduled for May 4, both the UDF (Congress-led) and the LDF (Left-led) are fighting to maintain their traditional strongholds against an aggressive push by the BJP.

The BJP maintains that Congress has "never done justice" to the people of Keralam, while Congress continues to frame its campaign around the defense of the state’s unique educational and social fabric against "external" political influence.

As the deadline for campaigning nears, the debate over literacy, regional identity, and political "intelligence" is likely to remain at the center of the electoral discourse.
